Abstract
The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) influenced scientific writing practices, including undergraduate thesis proposal writing. This research aimed to investigate the English Language Teaching (ELT) students' perceptions at Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji regarding the use of AI in writing undergraduate thesis proposals, identify the most helpful AI, and describe the best prompts for writing the background sections. This research employed a mixed-method approach with a convergent parallel design. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected simultaneously, so both sets of findings strengthened each other. Quantitative data were obtained from questionnaires completed by 50 ELT students, while qualitative data were collected through interviews with 4 selected ELT students and documentation of AI-generated backgrounds. The findings revealed that ELT students held positive perceptions regarding the use of AI, with an average score of 3.9. Ethical awareness emerged as the highest indicator, with 79% of ELT students agreeing that reviewing, revising, and validating AI-generated content was essential to maintain the integrity of scientific writing. The quantitative results were supported by interview findings, which showed that ChatGPT was perceived as the most helpful AI because it assisted in generating ideas, improving language, developing arguments, clarifying the text structure, and providing reference suggestions. Furthermore, interview and document analysis findings indicated that the best prompts were those that were clear, detailed, structured, and reference-based. These prompts produced coherent and high-quality background sections. Overall, this research concluded that ELT students perceived AI as a positive and helpful tool in the process of writing their undergraduate thesis proposals.
