Abstract
This study aimed to explore EFL students’ perceptions of using QuillBot as an online paraphrasing tool in supporting their academic writing performance. A descriptive qualitative research design was employed, involving nine students from the English Education Study Program at Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji, cohort 2024, who had prior experience using QuillBot for academic writing purposes. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and reflec tive journals and analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model, which consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings revealed that students held positive perceptions toward the use of QuillBot in academic writing. QuillBot was perceived as useful in assisting students to paraphrase source texts, simplify complex sentences, enhance vocabulary use, and reduce the risk of unintentional plagiarism. In addition, the tool was considered easy to use due to its clear and accessible features, which contributed to increased comfort and confidence in the writing process. However, students acknowledged that the paraphrased outputs still required careful review and revision to ensure accuracy and appropriateness in academic contexts. Therefore, QuillBot was perceived as an effective supporting tool that facilitates academic writing, rather than a substitute for students’ independent writing skills.
