Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the implementation of the KurikulumMerdeka in English writing instruction at SMK Negeri 1 Bintan Timur. Theresearch used a descriptive qualitative design with a case study approach. Datawere collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews withEnglish teachers, and the analysis of curriculum documents. Data analysis utilizedan interactive model that included data collection, data reduction, datapresentation, and the drawing of conclusions, while source triangulationwasemployed to ensure validity. The results showed that teachers implementedaholistic and contextual approach centered on students in accordance withtheprinciples of the Independent Curriculum. Learning emphasized generic text structures and functional linguistic elements before writing assignments, utilizingrelevant local materials. Project-Based Learning and group work methodseffectively increased students' motivation and writing outcomes. Factors that influenced teaching methods included formal curriculum demands, teachers' pedagogical beliefs, the school's vocational context, and responses to students' learning challenges. This research provided a practical contribution totheimplementation of the Independent Curriculum in vocational education, demonstrating how student development and context were integrated withfunctional skills and work practices.
