Abstract

Tanjungpinang English Language Education Study Program, Department of Language and Arts Education, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji. Advisor I: Assoc. Prof.Satria Agust, S.S., M.Pd., CIAR., MCE. Advisor II: Assist. Prof. Dr. Erwin Pohan, S.Pd., M.Pd. Keywords: animated film, Toy Story, listening comprehension, audio-visual media Listening comprehension is one of the essential skills in learning English, yet many students still face difficulties in understanding spoken language due to limited exposure to authentic listening materials. Therefore, the use of appropriate learning media is necessary to improve students’ listening comprehension. This research aimed to investigate the effect of using the animated film Toy Story on students’ listening comprehension at grade XI MAN Tanjungpinang. This research employed a quantitative method with a preexperimental design using a one-group pre-test and post-test. The sample consisted of 24 students from class XI F2 MAN Tanjungpinang. The data were collected through a listening comprehension test in the form of 15 fill-in-the-blank questions administered before and after the treatment. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, normality testing, and paired sample t-test through SPSS. The results showed that the mean score of the pre-test was 44.96, while the mean score of the post-test increased to 61.38. The paired sample t-test result indicated that the Sig. (2-tailed) value was 0.000, which is lower than the significance level of 0.05. In addition, the t-count value (18.385) was higher than the t-table value (1.714). These results indicate that there is a significant effect of using the animated film Toy Story on students’ listening comprehension. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the animated film Toy Story is an effective learning medium to improve students’ listening comprehension. Therefore, English teachers are encouraged to use animated films as alternative media to create a more engaging and effective listening learning process.
