Abstract

This study focuses on the effect of using a collaborative writing strategy in teaching descriptive text writing to students of SMP Tunas Ilmu Tanjungpinang. Based on preliminary observations, students’ writing ability was still low, particularly in developing ideas, organizing paragraphs systematically, and using appropriate vocabulary and grammar in descriptive texts. Therefore, this research aimed to determine whether the collaborative writing strategy had a significant effect on students’ descriptive writing ability. This study employed a quantitative method with a pre-experimental design using a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The sample consisted of one class that was given a pre-test, followed by treatment using the collaborative writing strategy, and a post-test. The research instrument was a descriptive writing test, and the data were analyzed using a t-test. The results showed an improvement in students’ mean scores from 32.12 in the pre-test to 36.43 in the post-test. The hypothesis testing indicated a significance value of 0.012 (< 0.05), meaning that the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of the collaborative writing strategy had a significant effect on students’ ability in writing descriptive texts at SMP Tunas Ilmu Tanjungpinang Keywords: collaborative writing, descriptive text, writing ability
