Abstract

Equivalence is a term of something that is equal in value and amount of importance and it can be discovered by comparing source language and target language text. This research has the purpose to found out how was the translation equivalence in translating Bataknese pantang larang or prohibition at the fifthsemester english department students‟ University Maritime Raja Ali Haji. The researcher technique used in this research was descriptive qualitative research. The data collected through translation test. The total participant were 2 Bataknese students from the fifth-semester, E02 class. In collecting the data, the researcher asked each of the Bataknese students to made ten pantang larang or prohibition sentence that applied in their tribe. The researcher analyzed the data by using Nababan‟s Translation Quality Instrument. The result of this research showed that the students translation equivalent mean score was 1.95 which means the student‟s translation quality was quite equivalent.
