Abstract
This study explores the reading comprehension difficulties faced by English Department students at Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji and the strategies used to overcome them. Using an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, quantitative data were collected from 54 students via questionnaires, followed by semi-structured interviews with five students for deeper insight. The findings revealed that students experience moderate to high levels of reading difficulty, primarily driven by limited vocabulary, complex sentence structures, and challenges in inferencing and text organization. Qualitatively, unfamiliar vocabulary, complex grammar, lack of background knowledge, and low motivation were identified as key impediments to comprehension. To tackle these obstacles, students utilized various cognitive and metacognitive strategies, including skimming, scanning, rereading, sentence simplification, digital translation tools, context clues, and background knowledge activation. The study concludes that reading difficulties are multidimensional, highlighting the need for explicit instruction in reading strategies and contextual vocabulary expansion in EFL instruction.
