Abstract
This study aims to determine the level of students' willingness to communicate (WTC) and the factors influencing it in English language learning at SMP Negeri 1 Tanjungpinang. This study uses a mixed-methods design with quantitative and qualitative approaches. Data were collected thru questionnaires given to 70 students, semi-structured interviews with six selected students, and classroom observations. The research results show that the majority of students have a relatively high willingness to communicate. In class VII A, the risk-taking courage indicator received the highest positive response at 80%, while the communication initiation indicator received the lowest positive response at 56%. In class VII B, the communication response and interaction indicators received the highest approval rate at 92%, while the communication frequency indicator received the lowest approval rate at 59%. Interview and observation results indicate that students' willingness to communicate is influenced by internal factors, such as lack of self-confidence, anxiety, and fear of making mistakes, as well as external factors like teacher support, peer support, and a conducive classroom environment. Therefore, teacher support and a positive learning environment play an important role in increasing students' willingness to communicate in English.
