Abstract

This research aimed to measure how much vocabulary and grammar knowledge that students have towards writing skill in recount text. The method of investigation was quantitative research with a correlation al design. The population of this research was the tenth grade of SMK Negeri 5 Tanjungpinang in the Academic Year of 2019/2020 in total 102 students, and then the class of Teknik 1 in total 32 students was taken as the sample. The sample was taken by using the cluster random sampling technique. Collecting data was done by using three designs of the test as the instrument, there are picture -cued designs for the vocabulary test, gap-filling designs for the grammar test, and the essay writing test to know students’ writing skill in recount text. In this research, SPSS version 19.00 was used to calculate data. Based on the data analysis calculated using the SPSS application, it was found that the F-count> F-table is 25.326> 3.328. It means that Ho is rejected, so it can be concluded that there is a significant correlation between students’ vocabulary and students’ grammar mastery towards writing skill at the Tenth grade of SMK Negeri 5 Tanjungpinang in the Academic Year of 2019/2020. Therefore, if the students need to achieve good writing skill, their vocabulary and grammar mastery should be good as well
