Abstract

This research was conducted to know the level of students’ mastery in using question tags and to know the factors influencing students’ difficulties in constructing question tags at the 4 th semester students of English education study program at UniversitasMaritim Raja Ali Haji. The population of this research is the 4 th semester students of English Education Department, UniversitasMaritim Raja Ali Haji which consists of two classes. The sample was takenwith using cluster random sampling, so the researcher chooses class E01 which consists of 32 students. When the researcher took the data, 1 students didn’t come to the class so total of the sample is 31 students. The sample on this study is treated to answer the test about Question Tags which consist of 25 questions. Their mastery is proving by finding out the percentage of their test.The test in the form of short answerwas used to collect the data. To find the percentage of the student’s mastery in using question tags, the researcher described the mean of the student’s score. Based on result of the data analysis, the percentage of the student’s answer was 55%. The researcher concludes that the mastery of the 4 th semester students of English Education Department, UniversitasMaritim Raja Ali Haji was in weak categoried. The factors influencing the students’ errors in constructing Question Tags are their intelligence,low motivation, lecturers’ method and limited time.
