Abstract

This study aims to improve students' vocabulary mastery through crossword puzzles in the eighth grade of SMPN 2 Tanjungpinang. The subjects of this study were students of class VIII.1 which consisted of 35 students, 19 female students and 16 male students. This research is Classroom Action Research (PTK) and decided to conduct action research by applying the model put forward by Arikunto. There are two cycles with three meetings in each cycle. There are four boards in each cycle: planning, action, observation and reflection. The results showed that the application of word wall media in the English teaching and learning process was effective in increasing students' vocabulary mastery. Crossword puzzles are an interesting medium for teaching and learning because in the classroom it makes it easier for students to see and remember vocabulary. Used crossword games can improve vocabulary mastery. In addition, their motivation and enthusiasm in learning English also increased. Furthermore, there was an increase from 69.92 to 80.67 from the post test. It was concluded that by playing crossword puzzles, the students' vocabulary increased.
