Abstract

This study aims to analyze and find grammatical errors found in paragraphs written by students English Education Department at Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji, Tanjungpinang. The subjects in this study were 3 semester students, totaling 41 students. The research method used in this research is descriptive qualitative research method. The error analysis used in this research is grammatical errors according to Betty (1989). The types of errors analyzed in this study were: spelling, capitalization, addition of words, omit a word, word form, plural and singular forms, word choice, article, run on sentence. The results of the study show that there are still many students who make grammatical errors in writing a paragraph. With the discovery of 106 total errors overall. The types of errors found in this study were as follows: 28 (26.42%) spelling errors, 23 (21.70%) capitalization errors, 13 (12.26%) omitting a word errors in sentences, 11 ( 10.38%) errors in adding words to sentences, 12 (11.32%) errors in word choice, 7 (6.60%) errors in word forms, 6 (5.66%) errors in run on sentences , 5 (4.72%) errors in article placement, 1 (0.94%) errors in plural and singular. It was concluded that many students still made grammatical errors in writing a paragraph.
