Abstract

The purpose of the research was to analyze the students’ ability in writing formal invitation letter using the format of Full -Block Style where the reason of choosing this topic was because the researcher needed to know the students’ mistakes and ability in writing the formal invitation letter. This research was qualitative research and the instrument was a written test. The participants of this research were the eleventh grade students at class XI IPS 1 of SMA Negeri 2 Tanjungpinang in the academic year of 2018/2019 which had been chosen using purposive sampling among the students at the eleventh grade of the school. The researcher adopted the technique of Bogdan and Biklen to find the students’ mistakes in writing the generic structure of the formal invitation letter and used a scoring rubric to determine the students’ ability in writing the letters. The result was all the students made many mistakes in writing the generic structure and most of them got the unsatisfactory outcome. Therefore, the students have to improve their ability in writing the letters
