Abstract
This study aims to determine students’ perceptions on using AI in learning writing skill. The subjects in this study were second-year students of the English education study program at Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with data collection through interviews and documentation. The method in this study uses a purposive sampling method with certain criteria so that 10 students were selected as subjects. The study results showed that second-year English education students positively perceive the use of AI in learning writing skills. They feel that AI is very helpful in improving the quality of writing, providing feedback, and helping the writing process. The AI applications they often use to help write are ChatGPT, Perplexity, Quillbot, Grammarly, Gemini, and Deepl. AI also provides significant benefits, including increasing self confidence, motivating students to learn independently, and increasing creativity in writing skills. However, several challenges need to be considered, such as technical constraints, excessive dependence on technology, and the risk of plagiarism, which can reduce creativity and critical thinking skills. Therefore, there is a need to use AI wisely and responsibly, with the awareness that AI is only a supporting tool rather than a substitute for critical thinking and creativity.
