Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of errors in using simple present tense in writing descriptive texts written by students and the most frequent errors. The research method used qualitative descriptive method, using written test to collect data. The participants of this study were 26 eighth grade students from SMP Negeri 4 Bintan. Ellis’s theory was used to analyze and collect data. The results showed that students made three errors mentioned in the theory based on linguistic aspects, namely grammar (subject-verb agreement, add a word, and omit a word), spelling, and punctuation. The most frequent error was grammar errors (64%) which consisted of 51% errors on subject-verb agreement, 2% add a word, and 10% errors omit a word. This was followed by spelling (27%), and punctuation errors (8%). It can be concluded that many students still need to improve their writing skills using simple present tense in writing descriptive texts. These errors are due to the lack of knowledge and understanding of grammar rules and students’ relatively weak vocabulary.
