Abstract
The purpose of this study was to find out whether the use of songs in English learning was more effective in increasing students’ extrinsic motivation than learning without songs. The reason for taking this title was because previously the researcher had conducted an interview with the English teacher regarding students’ learning motivation at SMP Negeri 2 Tanjungpinang. From the interview, the researcher found that students’ motivation and interest in English learning were relatively low, so it required new innovations in learning in order to attract students’ interest and motivation. Therefore, the researcher used songs in this study to find out whether songs could increase learning motivation in students. This research was a comparative research. To get the data, the researcher gave a questionnaire consisting of 10 questions. The participants in this study were class VIII.8 students at SMP Negeri 2 Tanjungpinang totaling 40 people. The results of this study indicated that the use of songs in learning was more effective in increasing student motivation and interest than without the use of songs. This was proven by the majority of students (77.5%) felt motivated to learn English by using songs, while only 15% felt the same when learning was done without songs.
