Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the extent to which the STAD (Student Teams Achievement Division) learning technique affected the reading comprehension performance of eighth-grade students at SMPN 13 Tanjungpinang. A quasi-experimental method employing a non-equivalent control group design was implemented in the study. Two classes, each with 26 students, comprised the research sample: class VIII A as the experimental group and class VIII B as the control group. Written assessments that were administered in the form of pre-test and post-test served as the instruments. To find differences before and after the intervention, an independent sample t-test was used. Based on the SPSS analysis results, the significance value (2-tailed) was 0.002. Since this value was less than 0.025, H₀ was rejected, H₁ was accepted, dan H₂ was rejected. Therefore, it was concluded that the STAD learning technique had an effect on students’ reading comprehension abilities at SMPN 13 Tanjungpinang.
