Abstract
This research aimed to analyze the difficulties faced by eighth-grade students in writing English narrative texts at SMPN 2 Bintan. Writing, as a productive language skill, is considered the most challenging for students, particularly in foreign language learning contexts. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method with data collected through writing tests and interviews. The participants consisted of 30 students, with six students selected for interviews based on high, average, and low writing test scores. Methodological triangulation between writing tests and interviews showed consistent results, strengthening the validity of the data. This research is expected to provide valuable insights for teachers, students, and future researchers in addressing writing difficulties in English narrative texts. The findings revealed that students experienced difficulties in four major aspects: content, mechanics, vocabulary, and grammar. Among these, mechanical issues such as incorrect spelling, punctuation, and capitalization were the most common, followed by limited vocabulary and grammatical errors. The study also found that many students tended to copy or reuse similar content, indicating a lack of originality and limited idea development. The results from the writing tests were supported by the interview findings, which confirmed that students’ struggles were related to lack of vocabulary mastery, grammatical knowledge, and writing motivation.
