Abstract

This study aimed to improve students’ speaking skill of tenth-grade students at SMKN 2 Tanjungpinang by using the storytelling technique. The subject of this study was students from the tenth grade of the Beauty and SPA class, with a total of 31 students. This research was a Classroom Action Research (CAR), with 2 cycles were conducted. Each cycle consisted of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting, and each cycle consisted of 2 meetings. It showed that the students’ speaking skill improved 48% (15 students) in the post-test of cycle 2 from 10% (3 students) in the pre-test. this improvement reached the target of 40% from 15 students who passed the minimum learning mastery standard ≥ 70. In addition, the observation results showed that an improvement in students’ participation in the classroom, even though the observation results in cycle 2 did not improve significantly due to the field issue. Based on the findings, it could be concluded that the use of storytelling was effective in improving students’ speaking skill and the class participation.
