Abstract

This study aims to analyze students’ anxiety in English reading activities. The subjects in this study were students of class K-2 2023 of English education study program of Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji. This research uses descriptive qualitative method with data collection through interviews, the method in this research uses purposive sampling method with certain criteria so that 10 students are selected as research subjects. The results showed that students of K-2 class 2023 English education revealed that reading anxiety significantly affects students’ reading comprehension, especially when dealing with unfamiliar vocabulary, long texts, and complex sentence structures. Almost 10 students interviewed mentioned that they experienced anxious, hesitation, and nervousness, making it difficult to fully engage with reading activities, especially academic texts. The study also found that lack of confidence is a major challenge in academic reading. Students often feel overwhelmed by technical language and long passages, fear misinterpretation and struggle to recall information. This supports previous research, which highlights that linguistic complexity and limited vocabulary knowledge contribute to higher cognitive load and increased anxiety. Therefore, to overcome this anxiety, students use various methods such as rereading, summarizing, using reference aids, and deep breathing techniques. Some students prepared in advance by translating unfamiliar words or familiarizing themselves with the text before reading. However, one student still struggled to overcome her anxiety, relying on repeated reading and translation rather than developing independent reading skills.
