Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of crossword puzzle media in improving vocabulary mastery of eleventh-grade Hospitality students at SMK Negeri 1 Bintan Timur. It used a quasi-experimental method involving two classes: the experimental class was taught using crossword puzzles, while the control class used conventional methods. A 20-item multiple-choice test was given as both pre-test and post-test. The results showed that the experimental class had a higher average post-test score (83.24) than the control class (78.18). The t-test revealed a significance value of 0.039 (< 0.05), indicating a significant difference between the two classes. Students in the experimental group also achieved scores categorized as good based on the vocabulary mastery criteria. Thus, crossword puzzle media is proven effective in enhancing students’ vocabulary mastery and creating an engaging learning atmosphere. It is recommended as an alternative for vocabulary teaching in vocational schools, especially in the hospitality field.
