Abstract

This study aims to explore students’ perceptions of the use of printed books and e- books in enhancing English reading comprehension. The research employed a mixed-method design, in which quantitative data were collected through a Likert- scale questionnaire to identify trends in students’ perceptions, while qualitative data were obtained through semi-structured interviews to examine students’ experiences and perspectives in greater depth. The participants were students of the English Education Study Program at Raja Ali Haji Maritime University. The findings indicate that printed books are perceived as more effective in supporting focus, concentration, deep comprehension, retention, and reflective reading habits due to minimal distractions and the presence of physical interaction with the text. Meanwhile, e-books are considered superior in terms of accessibility, flexibility, technological features, and cost efficiency, although they may lead to concentration disturbances and physical discomfort when used for prolonged periods. The results from both the questionnaire and interviews suggest that the two media are complementary, with the choice of reading medium influenced by learning needs, usage context, as well as access and economic constraints. This study recommends a balanced use of printed books and e-books to optimally support the improvement of students’ reading comprehension.
