Abstract

This study aims to determine students’ perceptions on using TikTok Multimodal Texts in learning English. The subjects in this study were 7th semester students in the 2025/2026 academic year of the English Education Study Program at Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji. This study uses a mixed-method design with data collection through questionnaires and in-depth interviews. The method in this study uses a total sampling of 65 students and a purposive sampling of 5 students as subjects. The study results showed that 7th semester English education students have a positive perception of the use of TikTok Multimodal Texts in learning English. Linguistic, visual, audio, gesture, and spatial elements are considered helpful in understanding the material and improving language skills, such as listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar. The short and clear video format of TikTok Multimodal Texts is also considered to make learning more efficient. They also felt that the interactive features of TikTok Multimodal Texts, such as live, duets, and challenges, along with its responsive algorithm, provided a more engaging learning experience compared to other social media. However, several challenges remained, such as distractions from entertainment content, language speed, and difficulty finding relevant content. Therefore, the use of TikTok Multimodal Texts needs to be done wisely so that the benefits of learning can be obtained optimally.
