Abstract

Fatika, Sandia. 2026. The Effect of Storytelling Technique on Eighth Graders’ Speaking Skill in Narrative Text. Undergraduate Thesis. Keywords: Storytelling Technique, Speaking Skill, Narrative Text This study aimed to examine the effect of using the storytelling technique on the speaking skills of eighth-grade students in learning narrative texts at SMPN 4 Tanjungpinang. The study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental research design. The population consisted of all eighth-grade students at SMPN 4 Tanjungpinang in the 2025/2026 academic year. The sample was selected through purposive sampling and involved 29 students from Class VIII.4 as the experimental group and 29 students from Class VIII.5 as the control group. The research instrument was a speaking test administered in the form of a pre-test and a post-test. Students' speaking performance was assessed based on five aspects: fluency, clarity of ideas, confidence, expression and body language, and audience engagement. The collected data were analyzed using the normality test, homogeneity test, Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test, and Mann–Whitney U Test with the assistance of SPSS software. The findings indicated that the data were not normally distributed but were homogeneous. The mean score of the experimental group increased from 44.41 in the pre-test to 68.07 in the post-test, while the control group's mean score improved from 39.38 to 51.59. Furthermore, the Mann–Whitney U Test revealed a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating that the null hypothesis (H₀) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H₁) was accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of the storytelling technique had a significant effect on the speaking skills of eighth-grade students in learning narrative texts at SMPN 4 Tanjungpinang.
