Abstract
Sociolinguistics studies the use of language in daily life as influenced by social norms, including the phenomenon of code-mixing. This phenomenon frequently occurs among first-semester students of the English Language Education Study Program at Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji (UMRAH) due to limited vocabulary and a lack of self-confidence during the learning process. This study aims to identify the types of code-mixing used by the students and describe the underlying factors causing it. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative design, the research subjects were selected using a purposive sampling technique, in which the researcher selected one class as the primary population and designated 8 students within it as interview informants. Data were collected through three techniques: classroom observation, audio recording, and semi-structured interviews. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of data condensation, data display, and drawing conclusions based on the model by Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2014). The results of the study indicated that all three types of code-mixing were found among the research subjects, with the most dominant type being insertion, while the most significant causal factor was a lack of vocabulary. Theoretically, these findings reinforce the sociolinguistic view that code-mixing is a natural communication strategy for early stage language learners to overcome barriers in expression. Practically, this research implies the importance of systematic vocabulary enhancement and the creation of a supportive academic environment to build students' confidence and minimize dependency on code-mixing.
