Abstract

This study aimed to determine whether the Partner Reading Strategy significantly affects students‟ reading comprehension of narrative texts at SMP Negeri 2 Tanjungpinang. This research employed a quantitative approach using a preexperimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The sample consisted of 33 eighth-grade students selected through purposive sampling. The research instrument was a reading comprehension test consisting of 20 multiplechoice questions administered as the pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed using the Shapiro–Wilk normality test and the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test through SPSS. The normality test indicated that the pre-test data were normally distributed with a significance value of 0.310, while the post-test data were not normally distributed with a significance value of 0.020. Therefore, the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test was used to test the hypothesis. The findings revealed that the mean score increased from 58.17 in the pre-test to 82.50 in the post-test. Furthermore, the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test showed a significance value (2-tailed) of < 0.001, which was lower than 0.05. It can be concluded that the Partner Reading Strategy has a significant effect on students‟ reading comprehension of narrative texts. Therefore, the Partner Reading Strategy can be considered an effective instructional strategy for improving students‟ reading comprehension.
