Abstract

This study investigated the effect of using crossword puzzles on students’ vocabulary mastery, particularly synonym knowledge, among eighth-grade students at SMPN 7 Tanjungpinang. Many students experienced difficulties in understanding synonyms, while the learning media used in vocabulary instruction were still limited and less engaging. Therefore, crossword puzzles were applied as an alternative learning medium to support vocabulary learning. This study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design involving two classes. The participants were 83 eighth-grade students from two classes at SMPN 7 Tanjungpinang. The data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions focused on synonym knowledge. The findings showed that the experimental class experienced significant improvement after receiving treatment using crossword puzzles. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test showed a significance value of 0.000, while the Mann Whitney U Test also indicated a significant difference between the experimental and control classes (p < 0.05). In conclusion, crossword puzzles can be used as an interactive and effective learning medium to support vocabulary learning among eighth-grade students. Future researchers are also recommended to explore other aspects of vocabulary mastery in different contexts.
