Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the quality of teaching media designed by the students of the English Language Education Department at Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji and to identify the challenges faced during the media design process. This study employed a descriptive qualitative design, and the data were collected through document analysis, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews. The findings showed that the teaching media generally demonstrated good quality, particularly in terms of visual appeal, material relevance, practicality, and clarity of presentation. Technology-based media tended to demonstrate stronger visual and technical performance, while conventional media reflected students’ creativity in developing classroom learning activities. However, several limitations were still identified, especially in aligning media with learning objectives, maximizing student involvement, and ensuring efficiency and accessibility during implementation. The study also revealed that students faced various pedagogical, technical, visual, and practical challenges during the media design process, including adapting materials into meaningful activities, balancing visual attractiveness with instructional clarity, engaging students actively, and dealing with technical issues such as internet access and application mastery. Overall, the findings indicate that designing effective teaching media requires not only creativity and technical skills, but also strong pedagogical understanding and awareness of classroom conditions.
