Abstract

This study aimed to investigate students’ perceptions of using DeepL to help understand difficult English vocabulary among students of the English Education Study Program at Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji. This study employed a descriptive qualitative design involving twelve participants who had experience using DeepL. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observation, and documentation, and analyzed using thematic analysis based on Braun and Clarke’s six phases. The findings showed that students generally had positive perceptions of DeepL because it was considered useful, easy to use, and helpful in understanding unfamiliar vocabulary, contextual meanings, and English texts more effectively. DeepL also supported vocabulary learning by increasing students’ confidence and learning efficiency. However, students faced several challenges, including unstable internet connections, character limitations, and difficulties in translating certain idioms and expressions. Although some students showed a degree of dependence on DeepL, they generally viewed it as a learning aid rather than a replacement for independent learning. Therefore, DeepL should be used in balance with active and independent vocabulary learning strategies.
