Abstract
This study aims to analyze the difficulties faced by eighth-grade students in writing recount text at SMP Negeri 10 Tanjungpinang, including the types of difficulties, the contributing factors, and the strategies students use to overcome them. This research employed a qualitative descriptive design involving 18 eighth grade students as writing documentation participants, six of whom were purposively selected for semi-structured interviews based on three achievement levels: low, middle, and high. Data were collected through students' writing documentation and interviews, then analyzed using thematic analysis based on the six stages proposed by Braun and Clarke (2022). The findings show that students' difficulties can be classified into five aspects: content, organization, vocabulary, language, and mechanics. Content difficulties were reflected in limited idea development; organization difficulties appeared as incomplete recount text structure; vocabulary difficulties were marked by simple and repetitive word choice; language difficulties centered on the misuse of the simple past tense; and mechanics difficulties were dominated by errors in capitalization and punctuation. These difficulties also varied across achievement levels, with lower-achieving students showing more consistent difficulties and greater reliance on external aids, while higher-achieving students demonstrated stronger self-regulation. It can therefore be concluded that students' difficulties in writing recount text arise from the interaction of multiple aspects rather than a single cause.
