Abstract

This study aimed to know how does the teaching speaking strategies applied by the EFL teacher at SMA Negeri 21 Batam. The subject in this research an English teacher in SMA Negeri 21 Batam. This research design used qualitative with analysis technique. The instrument of collecting data used observation and interview. Based on the instrument the researched observed the teacher how to teaching speaking use three strategies. The result of this research showed that the teacher was able to implemented communication games, discussion activity and role play in student's at SMA Negeri 21 Batam. In order to provide a collaborative learning environment and stimulate students' enthusiasm in speaking English, EFL teachers must not only be proficient in the language, particularly in speaking, but also be well-versed in teaching speaking tactics. They must to be knowledgeable about when and when to use the tactics based on the requirements and characteristics of the pupils. The purpose of the current study is to explain the speaking instruction techniques used by the EFL instructors at SMA N 21 BATAM. Speaking techniques are taught through discussions, role-playing, and communication games. According to the results, it is advised that EFL teachers vary their speaking instruction strategies by include discussion activities.
