Abstract

This study aims to investigate the forms of code mixing and code switching as well as the factors that caused the teacher to use those utterances. The method of this research was descriptive-qualitative method. The subject was the English teacher of SMPN 7 Tanjungpinang, which consists of one teacher. Based on the finding, the researcher concluded that the teacher of SMPN 7 Tanjungpinang used three forms of code mixing: insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization. And for code switching, the teacher used two forms: inter-sentential and intra-sentential. It was demonstrated through observation that the English teacher produced on code mixing insertion (76%) and on code switching inter-sententially (59%) in the classroom. After analyzing the data using the interview, the result of the interview session showed that the factors behind why the teacher of SMPN 7 Tanjungpinang used code mixing and code switching were because the students needed a way to easily comprehend the lesson explained by the teacher. Based on the result of the research, it could be suggested to the teacher that code mixing and code switching is one the alternative methods of teaching English or transfer the knowledge in different ways so that it is useful for both the teacher and the students as well.
