Abstract
This research delved into the implementation of Differentiated Instruction in the English subject at SMP Islam De Green Camp Tanjungpinang, a Sekolah Penggerak that implemented the Merdeka Curriculum. The study employed a qualitative descriptive design, involving observation, interviews with three English teachers, questionnaires for 58 students, and documentation. The findings revealed that teachers generally perceived the Merdeka Curriculum positively, appreciating its flexibility and differentiation in teaching methods. They understood Differentiated Instruction as a student-centred approach that catered to diverse learning styles and needs. However, the implementation of Differentiated Instruction was still evolving, with content differentiation being less developed than process, product, and learning environment differentiation. Teachers actively adapted their instructional strategies, assessments, and classroom environment to meet individual student needs. Challenges included diverse learning needs, negative attitudes towards English, limited vocabulary and memorization skills, lack of interest and engagement, time constraints, and limited resources. Despite these challenges, teachers were committed to improving Differentiated Instruction implementation through professional development, collaboration, and innovative teaching strategies. This research contributed to the understanding of Differentiated Instruction in the context of English language teaching in Indonesian junior high schools, offering insights for educators and policymakers seeking to enhance educational practices.
