Abstract
This research aims to determine the Analysis of Students' Errors in Answering High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) Questions in Reading Subjects at SMA Negeri 7 Batam. This research was conducted at SMA Negeri 7 Batam, Riau Islands Province in the academic year 2023/2024 in class XI IPS. The population of this study amounted to 50 students and the sample was 6 out of 50 students. This type of research uses descriptive qualitative design. The data collection instruments taken were reading test results and interviews. After analyzing the data, the researcher obtained data that showed Tiwi struggled in understanding questions and distinguishing important information, Dealovawati had problems with unfamiliar vocabulary, Kurnia faced challenges in articulating thoughts, Nadia lacked ideas for answers, Bian relied on others for answers, and Arjuna struggled comprehensively at all stages. Common factors contributing to these difficulties included limited critical thinking skills, deficient vocabulary, and inadequate time management. In addition, students were unable to identify the HOTS level due to the lack of explicit instruction from the teacher. These findings highlight the need for targeted interventions to improve students' cognitive ability, vocabulary, and time management, as well as clearer guidance on HOTS levels in the curriculum. Another finding was that students almost made many mistakes in answering the creation questions.
