Abstract

This study intends to expose students’ learning processes in writing skills, particularly in the Essay Writing course, which is aimed for sixthsemester English Education Study Program students at Raja Ali Haji Maritime University. This qualitative study included 10 individuals and used semistructured interviews with 11 questions as the primary tool. The findings revealed that students employed several tactics at each stage of the writing process, including prewriting, writing, and postwriting. During the pre-writing stage, students perform conceptual preparation such as reviewing essay examples, making a writing outline, accumulating keywords, discussing, and drawing inspiration from other media.In the writing stage, tactics include both spontaneous and organized writing, as well as the use of technology such as online dictionaries and grammar checkers. Meanwhile, during the post-writing stage, students demonstrate a reflective mindset by modifying in a variety of methods, including rereading, asking for feedback, comparing writing to examples, and using grammar checking tools. Some made considerable changes to their writing. This research emphasizes that students’ writing strategies are contextual, unique, and demonstrate a high level of metacognitive awareness. Thus, technical mastery is not the only factor that determines writing skills; learning strategies and reflective attitudes acquired during the learning process are also important.
