Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of the Teams, Games, Tournament (TGT) method on the English speaking skills of eighth-grade students at SMPN 6 Tanjungpinang. The research employed a pre-experimental design using a one-group pre-test and post-test model. The sample consisted of 25 students selected through purposive sampling. The students’ speaking abilities were assessed through an oral test focused on recount texts, covering four aspects: grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and story organization. The assessment was conducted by two raters using the same rubric, and the scores were averaged to ensure reliability. Data were analyzed using SPSS 25. The results of the normality test showed that the data were normally distributed, allowing the analysis to proceed with a paired sample t-test. The analysis revealed a significant increase in post-test scores compared to pre-test scores. The mean score increased from 52.52 to 70.24. The significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.000 indicated that the TGT method had a statistically significant effect on students’ speaking skills. Therefore, it can be concluded that the implementation of the TGT method is effective in improving students’ English speaking skills, particularly in expressing personal experiences.
