Abstract

This study aims to explore the perceptions of grade XI students of SMK Negeri 2 Tanjungpinang towards learning to write Analytical Exposition texts. The research used mixed methods with data collection through questionnaires and interviews. The research subjects were 28 students of Questionnaire and 9 students of Hospitality 1 grade XI who were purposively selected. The results of the questionnaire were analyzed using a Likert scale, while the interviews were used to deepen the understanding of the perceptions and challenges faced by students. The results showed that the majority of students had a positive perception of the generic structure and linguistic features required in writing Analytical Exposition texts. Students understand the importance of thesis, argument, conclusion, use of simple present tense, thinking verbs, and internal conjunctions to produce coherent and argumentative writing. However, there are still significant challenges in writing practice, such as difficulties in composing a clear thesis, developing a logical argument, writing an effective conclusion, and applying proper grammar. This study recommends the need for more focused learning, intensive writing practice, and constructive feedback from teachers to improve students' writing skills practically and critically. The findings are expected to be a reference for teachers and future researchers in developing learning strategies for writing Analytical Exposition texts at vocational high school.
