Abstract
Translating idiomatic expressions is one of the most difficult aspects of the translation process because their meanings cannot be understood literally and are highly influenced by cultural context; therefore, it requires appropriate strategies in the translation process. This study aims to identify the strategies used by seventh-semester students of the English Education Study Program at Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji (UMRAH) in translating idiomatic expressions and the reasons for choosing those strategies. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected through a written test involving 39 students and semi-structured interviews with eight students as informants. The data analysis was based on Baker (2018) theory of idiom translation strategies. The findings show that the most dominant strategy used was Translation by Paraphrase (64%), followed by Using an Idiom of Similar Meaning and Form (36%). The Paraphrasing strategy was chosen because it is considered more effective in conveying idiomatic meanings clearly and naturally in Indonesian. Meanwhile, the strategy of Using an Idiom of Similar Meaning and Form was applied due to students’ limited understanding of idioms, making this strategy perceived as easier and safer in the translation process. Thus, the conclusion show that the selection of idiom translation strategies is determined not only by preference but also by students’ level of language competence and their understanding of the characteristics of idiomatic expressions.
