Abstract

This research is focuses on college students' problems in speaking English and the objective of this research is to identify speaking problems faced by fifth semester English language education study program at Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji. The research method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method, The researcher uses questionnaire and interview as the tools data collection. From the the questionnaire findings College student in psychological aspect was got 50% in they are worried when speaking without preparation and out of topic and also that college students got 60% of them to afraid of making mistake while speaking English. From the language aspect Researcher found that from 30 college student that fill in the questionnaire almost 53,3% of the college students’ that they are have a problem to pronounce the word correctly. Beside that, there were 16 college students’ or 53,3% have a struggle to remember English vocabulary and have a limited vocabulary. In conclusion the psychological problem and language problem was affect college students’ in speaking English. From psychological problem, they were afraid of making mistake,anxiety and shyness, lack of confidence. From language problem aspect, most of college students’ they were have limited vocabulary and did not master the grammar become the most problem when they want to speaking English.
