Abstract

This study aimed to determine the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their speaking skill at SMP Negeri 9 Tanjungpinang. The study employed a quantitative approach using a correlational research design. The sample consisted of one class of eighth-grade students, totaling 19 students, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through a vocabulary test in the form of multiple-choice questions and a speaking test assessed using a scoring rubric. The data were analyzed using SPSS through normality test, linearity test, and Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The results showed that the correlation coefficient (r) was 0.498, which indicates a moderate positive correlation between the two variables. Furthermore, the significance value (2-tailed) was 0.030, which was lower than 0.05. This indicated that the null hypothesis (H₀) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H₁) was accepted. It can be concluded that there is a significant correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their speaking skill. Students with higher vocabulary mastery tend to have better speaking skill, although other factors may also influence speaking performance
