Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effect of digital storytelling on junior high school students' reading skills in recount texts. The study employed a quantitative approach using a pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design. The sample consisted of 37 eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Tanjungpinang selected through purposive sampling. The research instrument was a reading test comprising 20 multiple-choice questions. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, and the Paired Samples t-test with IBM SPSS Statistics version 27. The findings showed that the students' mean score increased from 58.51 in the pre-test to 84.86 in the post-test. The normality test indicated that the data were normally distributed, hereas the Paired Samples t-test yielded a p-value of < .001. Therefore, the null hypothesis was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. It can be concluded that digital storytelling had a significant positive effect on students' reading skills in recount texts and can be used as an effective instructional medium in English language learning.
