Abstract

Keywords: Reading comprehension, Story Grammar Strategy, Classroom Action Research. The purpose of this research was to investigate how can the students’ reading comprehension be improved by using story grammar strategy at the tenth grade of SMA Negeri 1 Bintan Timur. The subject of this research were tenth graders of social one of SMA Negeri 1 Bintan Timur which consisted of 34 students. The research instrument were reading comprehension test and observation checklist. Researcher used qualitative and quantitative data. Qualitative data were obtained from the observation checklist. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were obtained from preliminary study, post-test I and post-test II. The mean score in preliminary study was 67.35 and only 6 of 34 students (18.00%) passed the criteria. In the post-test cycle I, the mean score of students was 77.05 there were 21 of 34 students (61.76 %) who had passed the criteria. There was a significant improvement in cycle one, but the researcher had to continue in the second cycle because researcher’s target of improvement was 70%. In the post-test cycle II, the mean score of students was 82.35 there were 26 of 34 students (76.47%) passed the criteria. Based on the quantitative data above, the researcher realized that the improvement of students’ had achieved the target of the researcher’s improvement. Furthermore, the qualitative data showed that story grammar strategy improved students’ interest, enthusiastic and participation in reading narrative texts. So, it can be concluded that story grammar strategy succeeded in improving students’ reading comprehension of narrative texts at the tenth graders of SMA Negeri 1 Bintan Timur.
