Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find whether there is a use of reading strategies and what strategies they use when reading among EFL students at Raja Ali Haji Maritime University. Also to show whether the same strategies are used by students studying in coastal areas and students studying in urban areas. This study involved 58 EFL students majoring in English at Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji in the Coastal Area Researchers use survey research method, the Survey of Reading Strategies (SORS) questionnaire to find out the use of reading strategies; Reading strategies were classified into Global Strategies, Problem Solving, and Supporting Strategies. Quantitative research was regarded as the organized inquiry about phenomena through a collection of numerical data and execution of statistical, mathematical, or computational techniques. Based on the results of the descriptive statistics computation, the mean score of 3.65, and the standard deviation of .14 the students most commonly utilized the problem-solving (M 3.81, SD .18) and global strategies (M 3.62, SD .14) reading strategy categories. "Support strategies (SUP)" was the technique that students liked the least (M 3.53, SD 0.15). EFL students actively used reading strategies. the EFL students used the problem-solving reading categories the most out of the three (global, problem-solving, and support techniques). This study suggests that students actively employed reading techniques, which is good news for educators since it means that students will be more conscious of the tactics they use in reading assignments if teachers explicitly teach them. The findings of this study revealed that (1) there is a use of reading strategies among EFL students at Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji in the coastal area; (2) EFL students are active strategy users; they prefer problem-solving strategies over global and global and supporting strategies; (3) The reading strategies used by students who study in coastal areas are the same as those of students who study in urban areas, in conclusion, the more students apply problem-solving strategies in reading activities the better their ability to comprehend texts. This result also shows that there is no gap between the background of coastal communities and urban communities because the reading strategies often used by students in coastal areas are the same as the reading strategies used by students in urban areas.
