Abstract

This study aims to investigate the difficulties faced by seventh-grade students of SMP IT Al Madinah Tanjungpinang in understanding narrative texts. This research used a descriptive qualitative method to collect and analyze the data. The subjects were 36 students from class 7D. The data were obtained through questionnaires and interviews. The results of the questionnaire showed that many students struggled with understanding the content, plot, main characters, and moral values of the narrative texts. Additionally, students felt that narrative texts were too long, boring, and difficult to comprehend due to their limited vocabulary. The interview results revealed that most students lacked interest in reading narrative texts and had difficulty understanding word meanings and text structure. Lack of motivation and reading interest were the major contributing factors to their comprehension problems. Based on these findings, it is suggested that teachers use more engaging teaching media and simplify reading materials to help students better understand narrative texts.
