Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of using the mind mapping technique on students’ reading comprehension of maritime-context report texts at SMPN 7 Tanjungpinang. This study employed a quasi-experimental design involving pre-test and post-test groups. The subjects of this study were ninth-grade students, namely class IX.1 consisting of 46 students as the experimental group and class IX.3 consisting of 46 students as the control group. To collect the data, multiple-choice and essay tests were used as the research instruments. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 27 through an Independent Samples t-test. The results showed that the significance value (2-tailed) was lower than 0.001 and 0.05, and the t-test value was 3.877, which was higher than the critical value of 1.987. These findings indicated that the null hypothesis (H₀) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Hₐ) was accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of the mind mapping technique had a significant effect on students’ reading comprehension of report text material.
