Abstract
This study aimed to describe students’ perceptions of the influence of English Students Association (ESA) activities on their speaking skill and to explore how ESA activities affect speaking ability based on students’ lived experiences. The study employed a mixed-methods approach using an explanatory sequential design. The quantitative phase involved distributing a questionnaire to 37 students of the English Education Study Program at Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji who were active or former members of ESA during the 2024/2025 period. The qualitative phase consisted of semi-structured interviews with 8 purposively selected participants. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics in the form of frequencies and percentages, while qualitative data were analyzed through thematic analysis. The findings revealed that students generally had positive perceptions of the influence of ESA activities on their speaking skill. Most respondents agreed that ESA activities increased their motivation, self-confidence, speaking fluency, vocabulary development, and opportunities to practice English in authentic situations. The interview findings further indicated that activities such as organizational meetings, teamwork, serving as moderators or masters of ceremonies, and spontaneous discussions helped students develop their speaking ability and reduce anxiety when using English. The study concludes that ESA activities function as a supportive environment that provides meaningful opportunities for students to develop their speaking skill beyond the classroom.
