Abstract

The purpose of this study was to ascertain how the Listening Cloze Technique affected eighth-grade students at SMPN 4 Tanjungpinang's listening comprehension of narrative texts. The study used a pre-test and post-test quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group. Students in the eighth grade at SMPN 4 Tanjungpinang during the academic year 2025–2026 made up the study's population. The experimental class, class 8.6, and the control class, class 8.8, each had forty pupils. While the control group got traditional listening education, the experimental group was instructed utilizing the Listening Cloze Technique. A listening comprehension test with gap-fill, true-or-false, and multiplechoice questions based on narrative texts served as the research tool. IBM SPSS Statistics 29.0 was used to evaluate the data using the Independent Samples t-test, homogeneity, and normality. All significance values were more than 0.05, according to the normality test results, suggesting that the data were normally distributed. With a significance value of 0.691 (>0.05), the homogeneity test likewise showed that the data were homogeneous. Additionally, a significant value (two-tailed) of <0.001, which was less than 0.05, was found using the Independent Samples t-test. The Listening Cloze Technique significantly improved students' listening comprehension of narrative texts, it can be inferred.
