Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of skimming and scanning techniques on the reading comprehension ability of narrative text in class VIII students at SMPN 14 Tanjungpinang. This research was based on the problem of students' low reading comprehension skills, which were characterized by difficulties in finding general information, main ideas, and specific information in the text. This research used a quantitative method with a pre-experimental design of the one-group pre-test and post-test type. The research sample consisted of 24 students of class VIII. The instrument used was a description test consisting of 10 questions. The data were analyzed through a normality test using Shapiro-Wilk and hypothesis testing using a paired sample t-test with the help of SPSS 23. The analysis results showed that there was an increase in the average score from the pretest of 58.75 to 85.63 in the post-test. The t-test showed a significance value (2-tailed) of 0.000 < 0.05, which meant that there was a significant effect of skimming and scanning techniques on reading comprehension in class VIII students at SMPN 14 Tanjungpinang. This finding indicated that the application of skimming and scanning techniques could be an effective strategy to improve students' reading comprehension skills on narrative text.
