Abstract

The analysis of students' problems with speaking English is the main goal of this study. Finding the speaking problems that eighth-grade students at SMPN 26 Bintan face is the aim of this study. The researcher collected data using interviews and questionnaires as part of a descriptive qualitative approach. The results showed that both psychological and language-related issues contributed to students' speaking difficulties. Among the psychological problems were low motivation, anxiety, shyness, lack of confidence, and fear of making mistakes. Pronunciation issues, poor grammar, and a small vocabulary were the main causes of language difficulty. 90% of students showed feeling nervous while speaking without preparation, 85% showed having difficulty recalling vocabulary, and 80% showed having difficulty using grammar, according to the questionnaire results. These conclusions were corroborated by the interview results, which revealed that the majority of students experienced anxiety, lacked confidence, and were terrified of making mistakes when speaking English. In conclusion, students' ability to speak English was greatly impacted by both psychological and linguistic problems.
