Abstract

The reading comprehension of eighth-grade students (class VIII.A) at SMP Negeri 15 Tanjungpinang is still relatively low, which has become one of the problems in English learning. This study was conducted to improve students' reading comprehension by implementing QuizWhizzer as learning media. The type of research used is Classroom Action Research (CAR), which was carried out in one cycle and involved 23 students as research subjects. The instruments used in this study included a reading comprehension test, observation checklist, and documentation. The research was considered successful if at least 70% of students scored 68 or above, in accordance with the school’s Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKM). The results showed an improvement in students' reading comprehension, as seen from the average test in pre-cycle score of 67.17 with a completion rate of 56.52%, which increased to 74.56 in the post-test with a completion rate of 82.61%. In addition, the observation results showed that students were more active and enthusiastic during learning activities using QuizWhizzer, which is interactive and enjoyable. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of QuizWhizzer as learning media is effective in improve students’ reading comprehension in English subject at class VIII.A of SMP Negeri 15 Tanjungpinang.
